Byron native Baker preparing for Olympic Trials

BYRON — Byron’s Nolan Baker is making final preparations for the U.S. Greco-Roman Wrestling Olympic Trials that will be held in Fort Worth, Texas from April 2-3. 

The champions from the U.S. Olympic Trials will become eligible to represent the United States at the 2021 Summer Olympic Games in Tokyo, Japan from Aug. 1-7. Baker qualified for the U.S. Olympic Trials at 67 kilograms (147.7 pounds) after placing fourth at the 2019 Senior Nationals in December 2019.

Baker, who is sponsored by the New York Athletic Club, recently competed in the Capitol Cup held in Sterling, Virginia, on Saturday, Feb. 27.  Baker emerged the champion of the bracket, which featured eight elite senior-level wrestlers. 

Baker won a 9-0 quarterfinal technical superiority over Corbin Nirschl, a 2020 U23 Nationals third-place finisher. Baker defeated 2018 U.S. Open runner-up Jessy Williams in the semifinal round. Baker went on to win the finals by a 13-4 technical superiority over 2019 U23 World Team member Lenny Merkin.
