Stillman Valley High School chess team wins back-to-back 1A ICCA state titles

STILLMAN VALLEY — The Stillman Valley Chess team participated in the IHSA State Chess Tournament in Peoria on Friday, Feb. 9 and Saturday, Feb. 10. The two-day tournament consists of four rounds on Friday and three rounds on Saturday. Each team plays seven rounds.

Stillman Valley competed against:

Round one Lake Villa (Lakes), winning 51.5-16.5. Round two Aurora (Illinois Math and Science Academy), losing 56.5-11.5. Round three Niles (Northridge Prep), winning 55.5-12.5. Round four Normal (University), winning 59.5-8.5. Round five Glenview (Glenbrook South), losing 56.5-11.5. Round six Chicago (Brooks), winning 42-26. Round seven Skokie (Niles North), losing 49.5-18.5.

Stillman Valley ended up with four wins and three losses, placing 45th out of 128 teams.

This also placed Stillman Valley in a No. 1 ranking, according to ICCA (Illinois Chess Coaches Association) for schools of an enrollment of 700 or lower. Making them back-to-back 1A ICCA state champions.

Connor O’Sullivan - five wins one draw. Ara Michigan - two wins four draws. Trevor Miller - three wins two draws. Dawson Johannsen - one win. Landon Paff - one win.
