OREGON — In celebration of the 50th anniversary of the iconic Batwing® rotary cutter, The City of Oregon, Illinois, at last night’s Council meeting, proclaimed 2013 “The Year of the Woods Batwing” and ceremoniously renamed the main thoroughfare, “Batwing Blvd.”
“We’re thrilled to have the City join us in the year-long celebration,” said Jerry Johnson, President Woods Products Division. “We are proud to have our roots in Oregon and truly appreciate the support we’ve received from the community throughout the years. Our employees think it’s pretty cool to drive down Fourth Street and see the signs. It gives all of us great pride in our work and in the City of Oregon.
In 1946 Keith, Mervel and Leonard Wood chose the City of Oregon along the banks of the Rock River to build their new venture, Wood Brothers Manufacturing Co. and produced the first successful tractor-mounted rotary cutter. Known for hard work and innovation, the brothers continued to invent new products to help farmers and maintenance workers cut brush and mow grass.
In the late 1950’s, two Woods engineers began sketching concepts for a flexible wing cutter, with an innovative drive system and decks hinged in three pieces to better conform to the rolling terrain. With the introduction of the Batwing® rotary cutter in the autumn of 1963, the Batwing® took flight and has significantly affected the overall growth of the flex-wing mower product category. Today, Batwing® cutters are prevalent on farms, roadsides, campuses, estates, and homes throughout the United States and exported to countries around the world.
