ON Tuesday evening, July 10, approximately 30 people gathered at the Bocker Grain Facility, located at Route 64 and West Branch Road for a grilled pork chop diner and to welcome Juan Pablo from Guatemala and to hear him speak about what the Food Resource Bank Project is doing for him and the people of his country. He farms on one acre of land as do most of the farmers in his country, attempting to provide a living on this small parcel of land. He was astonished to see the large farms in Northern Illinois and to see and touch the large tractors, trucks, planters, combines, etc. that are used to produce the crops here in the United States.
The Food Resource Bank project partners a farmer who donates the proceeds from the produce harvested from the acreage he designates to Food Resource Bank with other persons, churches or organizations who are willing to share the cost of the seed, fertilizers, planting, harvesting and other costs to produce the crop. The money given to FRB is then invested in seed, animals, agricultural businesses and other projects for farming in third world countries to provide a better living for their families. For the past several years, Nelson Farms have partnered with Bocker Grain and Polo Co-op to make a monetary donation possible to FRB.
