Wrestling: Meridian Junior High team battles at Route 72 tournament

Cardinals crown three conference champions

WINNEBAGO — The Meridian Junior High wrestling team took eighth in the Route 72 Conference Championship tournament on Feb. 20. The Cardinals crowned one varsity winner as well as two JV winners and two third-place finishers in the conference tournament.

Tyler Bell won the Varsity 135 Division with a 3-0 record, scoring a fall over Polo’s Kaiden Eberly, Oregon’s Hunter Skoli and Byron’s Brooks Auter. Tristan Jackson won the JV 112 Division with a 16-6 major decision over Harvard’s Gage Hansen, a 5-2 decision over Polo’s Tyler Moshure and a fall over Polo’s Gage Loomis. Bradley Bankes won the JV 135 Division with falls over Winnebago’s Sebastian Unger, Polo’s Kali Wright and Polo’s Brodie Alitzer.

Isaiahs Carreno took third in the Varsity 95 Division with a 3-1 record, notching falls over Harvard’s Giovani Ramirez, Durand’s Evan Flores and Genoa-Kingston’s Ethan Sharif. Austin Paulson took third in the Varsity 100 Division with a 2-1 record, scoring an 11-3 major decision over Pecatonica’s JC Moyer and a 7-5 decision against Harvard’s Charlie Parker.
