OREGON – Neil K. Minnis, 63, of Oregon, died unexpectedly on Saturday, July 22, 2017 in Swedish-American Hospital, Rockford. He was born Dec. 28, 1953 in Chicago.
Neil has been in the Ogle County area since 1983 and he married Robin VanDien in Grand Detour, on Sept. 13, 1986. He was an active member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Oregon and enjoyed being involved with the youth groups. He was a great husband, father, and grandfather and liked remodeling projects, yard work, traveling, and any adventure activities. Neil served in law enforcement for 42 years and worked at police departments in Rock Falls, Dixon, Byron, Oregon and, presently was serving with the Ogle County Sheriff's Dept.
Survivors include his wife, Robin; daughters, Jennifer Minnis of Grayslake, Leigh Ann "Annie" Minnis of Mount Morris; son, Nathaniel (Kristen) Minnis of South Elgin; and grandchildren, Lexi, Sam, Ethan, and McKenzie.
His parents Oren & Velma (Weidman) Minnis preceded him in death. He was also preceded in death by his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Lynn & Phyllis VanDien.
Memorial services will be held Monday, July 31, 2017 at 10:30 a.m. in St. Paul Lutheran Church, Oregon with Rev. Richard Tomlinson officiating. Interment will be in Riverview Cemetery. Visitation will be Sunday from 2-5 p.m. in Farrell-Holland-Gale Funeral Home, Oregon. Memorials may be directed to Robin Minnis to be donated to a fund that helps children of fallen police officers or to St. Paul Lutheran Church.
