Nash gym being renovated

OREGON – The Nash Recreation Center gymnasium will be going through a multi-phase renovation over the next year.

Phase one has begun and the gymnasium will be closed Monday, Feb. 26 and will reopen on Monday, March 4.

The current gymnasium was an addition that was completed in 1990. In 1989, the Oregon Park District Board determined more gym space and a larger fitness center were needed. Construction began, doubling the size of the gymnasium, adding the Prairie Room and the lower level Fitness Center to Nash Recreation Center. Throughout the construction Nash Recreation Center remained open.

The first phase will be a huge facelift for the gymnasium. Work has already begun on removing and blocking in the window that overlooked the east basketball court. The window was originally installed to allow a supervisor to monitor the gym. In addition to blocking off the window, repairs will also be done to any joints in the gymnasium that need repair.

“We are excited to give the gymnasium a fresh look to complement our facility,” said Executive Director Erin Folk. “Throughout the years we have updated Nash Recreation Center and the gymnasium has gone untouched. The renovation, while minor, will make a significant impact on one of the most used spaces in the facility. The staff is excited to unveil this renovation.”

Once masonry work has been completed, the facelift will begin. A new color scheme of light grey, blue and green will be added to the gymnasium. The Oregon Park District has contracted with a local, professional painter to change the peach block to light grey. A blue accent stripe will go above the grey with white paint above that. A green accent wall will also be incorporated on the east wall. The colors will complement the Oregon Park District logo.

After the paint has cured, new under hoop matting will adorn the walls with the Oregon Park District logo. During the painting phase the gymnasium will be closed for a week beginning Feb. 26 and opening again on March 4.

This cosmetic facelift will conclude phase one of the gymnasium renovation. Phase two of the renovations will be completed over the next year and projects are still in the planning stages include lighting, curtain divider and repairing and refinishing the wood court.
